Known as the Gateway to Boulder Valley, Superior is centrally located near major employment centers along U.S. Highway 36, bookended by Boulder 10 minutes to the Northwest and Denver 20 minutes Southeast. Superior began as a coal mining community in the 1800s and remained a tiny town of about 250 people until the 1980s when the suburban developments of Rock Creek Ranch began. Superior continues to grow, with new homes being built now in the recently developed town center.
